RSCDS History
The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society was founded in 1923 when Jean Milligan and Ysobel Stewart realised that the traditions of Scottish dancing were in danger of being lost for ever. It was through their commitment that the Society flourished to the extent that today there is a world-wide membership approaching 12,000.
Such was the importance of maintaining the dancing traditions that a system of teacher training was instituted in the early years. Another feature to become well established was the annual residential Summer School at the University of St Andrews where dancers from all over the world join together to improve their dancing skills.
More than 500 Branches and Affiliated Groups are administered from the RSCDS headquarters in Edinburgh, from where a wide range of publications and resources are available.
