During the 1950s there was much enthusiastic Scottish Dancing in the Craven area of the Yorkshire Dales. Several groups began as “Adult Evening Classes” based at a number of locations in the area. Mrs Cook, a teacher with these groups, was enthused to form an official Branch of the RSCDS. However, she first had to become a qualified teacher of Scottish Country Dancing and gain her Preliminary Certificate, which she did at St Andrews in the summer of 1957. The following year she obtained her “Full Certificate” and everything was ready to form the Branch.
A meeting was called on Monday December 1st 1958 at Malham Youth Hostel, where it was agreed to form an official Branch of the RSCDS. Approval from RSCDS Headquarters was granted in January 1959.
The first meeting of the North West Craven branch of the RSCDS was held on Monday 12th January 1959. Initial membership was about 40 people with subscriptions being 5/- per year. (That is 5 shillings or 25p).
Over the years the interest of the Branch extended westwards until today the geographical influence
of the Branch’s activities stretches to include South Lakes, North Lancashire, and Furness, as well as the Yorkshire Dales.
Areas we cover:
Kendal
Kirkby Lonsdale
Windermere
